About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Brooklyn, Stolovaya is a charming Russian restaurant that invites you to embark on a culinary journey through authentic Eastern European flavors. Located at 813 Avenue U, this cozy spot perfectly captures the comforting essence of Soviet-era dining with a warm, bustling atmosphere that draws both locals and visitors alike.

Stolovaya is a treasure trove for lovers of hearty, soul-satisfying dishes. The menu boasts classics like Beef Stroganoff, rich and tender, swimming in a velvety mushroom sauce that coats every bite with satisfying depth. The Borsch here is a vibrant, tangy beet soup that awakens your palate, while the Dumpling Soup is a warm hug in a bowl, featuring delicate, handmade dumplings that melt in your mouth. For those craving grilled delights, the lamb and chicken kebabs come perfectly charred, juicy, and seasoned to evoke a smoky warmth.

Whether you order traditional staples like Varenyky with Potato or the indulgent Chicken Kiev – a crispy, golden crust housing succulent, buttery chicken – each dish is thoughtfully prepared to deliver an authentic taste of Russia’s rich culinary heritage. Fans of rich textures will delight in the Beef Medallions and the distinctive Rabbit in White Sauce, while the Chocolate Cream Cheese Layer Cake offers a decadent finish that lingers pleasantly on the tongue.

The attention to detail extends beyond the food to the inviting dining ambiance. Stolovaya feels like a step back in time, blending nostalgia with an energetic vibe as diners enjoy generous portions without straining the wallet. The aroma of fresh bread, the clinking of glasses filled with traditional Kompot, and the gentle hum of the Russian language flowing around add layers of authenticity that transform every meal into an immersive cultural experience.

Guests repeatedly praise Stolovaya’s hospitality and value. As one diner, Michel Nee, reflects, “The meals show attention to detail, the staff shows personal care, and prices show customer appreciation.” Meanwhile, Nika Arslan underscores the undeniable pull of the food and atmosphere, calling it “exceptionally tasty” and “homely, comforting.” Even those new to Russian cuisine or unfamiliar with the language find themselves welcomed and well-cared for, despite some communication challenges noted by Atheling Erelithe.

In essence, Stolovaya is more than a restaurant—it's an embrace of Russian culture through its food, service, and atmosphere. For anyone craving authentic, hearty dishes in a setting that feels both lively and intimate, this Brooklyn gem is a must-visit. It’s a place where each meal tells a story, and every visitor leaves with a little more warmth in their heart.

A review from a Chinese person: It's quiet great to be honest. The food is delicious, the portion is huge, the price is affordable, and the server is helpful. The only inconvenience that I had is communication since basically everyone there (customers and staffs) mainly speak Russian (or maybe other slavic languages, I am not sure), so it is kinda hard to order or getting staffs' notice. But to be fair, this kind of situation happens in every ethical restaurant, like Chinese restaurants. Therefore, I don't really blame them for this, so over all, it is a nice place to go. Would recommend to others.

The meals show attention to detail, the staff shows personal care, and prices show customer appreciation. The food excels completely at reasonable prices. The standouts are evident but quality is consistent. Their employees deliver flawless attention alongside remarkable dishes. My future visits to this neighborhood include this place.

Food here is exceptionally tasty! I was lucky to stop by right at noon when they opened, so I didn’t have to wait—because it does get packed quickly (and for good reason). The atmosphere is inviting and cozy, but the highlight is definitely the food. Every dish feels homely, comforting, and absolutely delicious. I can’t recommend this place enough!

Visited Stolovaya for lunch. The Charcho and Russian-style chicken dumpling soups were excellent! The Kiev chicken (I had it with mashed potatoes and my wife had it with buckwheat) was disappointing - dry and lacking flavor, felt overpriced. Kompot was perfect. The atmosphere was good, bustling with people. Service was excellent and fast. Overall, it has a Soviet Union vibe, though the food quality back then felt better. Good for a quick bite. I'd suggest trying other items on the menu.
